What is obesity?

A person is considered to be obese when his or her body mass index (BMI) is 30 or above. BMI is a calculation of body fat percentage compared to a person's height and weight. A BMI of 30 or higher typically indicates that an individual is roughly 100 pounds or more over the ideal body weight for his or her height. Morbid obesity is classified as having a BMI of 40 or higher. Obesity is currently the second leading cause of preventable death in the U.S.

Obesity is a major public health challenge that millions of Americans struggle with. It is known to raise the risk of:

  • Hypertension
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Heart disease
  • Stroke
  • Gallbladder disease
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Sleep apnea
  • Respiratory problems
